Phase 1
Planning Phase
What’s the Big Picture?
- Decide the main purpose of your website.
- Figure out the titles of a few key pages.
- Evaluate your skills & comfort level with technology.
- Decide how much of the work you’ll do yourself.
- Choose the platform (technology) you’ll use.
- Make sure you’re clear on your ideal visitor, the action they should take, and the key impression or feeling you want to convey before you begin constructing your site.
Phase 2
Content Gathering Phase
Get ahead with your content
- Decide what contact information you’ll share on your website.
- Shortlist or create, images you’d like to use.
- Shortlist your website colours, but don’t finalize them yet.
Phase 3
Early Site Creation Phase
Time to get things going!
- Setup the technology which is chosen during planning.
- Create the first few pages.
- Add text to these pages.
- Add your main Call to Action buttons.
- Choose your font for your text.
- Add images to your pages.
- Add colour to the website.
- Incorporate links and social media profiles.
Phase 4
First Draft Phase
Your website takes shape
- Publish a draft version of your website
- Check how the website looks on a smaller screen
- Get feedback from 1-2 trusted people
- Amend the words,images & layouts based on your own reactions and fedback recieved.
Phase 5
Enhancement Phase
Professional details
- Add words which your ideal visitor may use to search for services like yours.
- Give your website a short, meaningful description.
- Create a privacy policy
- Add your contact information.
- Place a copyright year in your footer.
- Create and add your favicon.
- Remove any branding which shows the technology you used.
- Create a pop up and/or top banner message, if you want these.
- Edit your 404 (Page Not Found) message, if this feature is available to you.
Phase 6
Email List Setup Phase
Optional at first: Email List.
- Create your free resource / lead magnet, if offering one.
- Set up your email list account.
- Create sign up form, and/or find code to embed in your website.
- Add sign up form or link to your website.
- Make sure free resource is delivered during email welcome sequence.
- Test your email sign up form and welcome message.
Phase 7
Quality Phase
Treat your customer with respect.
- Test your contact form, if using one.
- Proofread all your text carefully.
- Check all your links.
- Claim your website for Pinterest.
- Add the code for Google Analytics.
- View your site again on a mobile device!
- Test your site in different desktop browsers, too.
Phase 8
Publishing Phase
Optional at first: Email List.
- Purchase a domain name, if you wish.
- Edit the DNS records of your domain to make your website live.
- Check again that everything is working.
- Submit your sitemap to Google.
- Submit your sitemap to Bing.
Phase 9
Set up Maintenance Phase
You will be glad you took these steps
- Back up your website.
- Make a careful note of your color codes.
- Make a calendar entry to review, refresh, and back up your site.
Phase 10
Celebration Phase
Congratulations!
- Update your social media profiles.
- Design and order coordinating business cards.
- Share your new website with clients, family & friends.
- Post on social media to draw attention to your new website.
