AWS Server Migration Service | Kulmedia Cloud Solutions
How does server migration work in AWS?
The AWS Server Migration Service or AWS SMS is all about moving your on-premises server to the cloud and reduce the operational costs. The service makes it easier to move multiple servers together, automate them, set their schedule and keep a track of the process through the console. You can also migrate from one region to the other and track the progress easily from the management console.
How Does It Work
The AWS Server Migration service works on a basis of ‘replicate and move’ model. Each component of the data on server is replicated and the copy is moved to Amazon Machine Image (AMI), accessible from an EC2 instance. In the case of re-platforming, the data is first converted into an acceptable code for the target and then moved. To start migrating, first you will have to set up your AWS account, which is free of charge.
Through your account, you can install a server migration connector on your VMware. vCenter on vServer is the next step very much helpful in understanding the activities.
These two things anchor the process. The migration process will require a good bandwidth and uninterrupted connection. You can also create permissions from your IAM console to assign groups and roles. You can track the process and its different stages on dashboard or AWS Migration Hub.
You can move things in one go or break it into different components and then move them. The break it and load it method is good when you have too much of the data and everything cannot be backed up at the same time. The one-time-load will help when some downtime can be afforded and the whole functionality might be affected due to the partial migration. You can also switch between different management systems. The AWS SMS allows users to shift multiple inventories together on a single plane.
How Is Server Migration Service Helpful ?
The process goes through replication and encryption stages making the transfer of data secure and non-injectable. When the server is moved to the cloud, it becomes secure as the data can only be accessed by rightful authentication.
Mitigates physical failure as the data is stored over different machines. So, in case, there is some physical damage to a certain part of machinery , the entire network will not collapse. The data is distributed over several parts and there remains a strong backup.
Reduces downtime as the application keeps running even when a repair is undergoing. This is done with the help of server virtualization and backed up data recovery BDR.
A significant reduction on infrastructural burden and operational costs. Companies are migrating to the cloud at an escalating rate due to the reduced load on their premises, attention and cost needed to operate their on-premises servers. This also reduces burden on both manpower and machines.
Utilises your reserved instances. The company which has already been using AWS compute capacity or storage capacity can make use of their reserved capacity by moving a major part of their work, that are servers, on the cloud. This also advances the timeline of the development and deployment of applications and the on-premises infrastructure can be used for other purposes.
